Direct Vapor versus Mouth to Lung Vapor

When looking through vape websites, there are terms that come up quite often: direct lung vapor (DL) or mouth to lung vapor (MTL). At first glance, these terms may not make any sense, thankfully, this post will help to understand what on earth DL and MTL mean.

To sum things up, these terms are used to define different inhaling techniques. There are many variables when trying to decide which technique is right for you. For example, equipment is important. Also, the style of vaping used per person can affect which technique would be superior. 

EXPLAINING DIRECT VAPOR LUNG INHALE

Using direct lung inhale (DL) is when you are inhaling the vapours straight to your lungs. This is done when you do not hold the vapours in your mouth for a few moments before the full inhale. Basically, you are directing all vapours to head immediately to your lungs.  Another common term for DL is straight to lung inhale. 

How to do Direct Lung?

This method works best if you have a device that has adjustable air flow, if you can, open it to full beforehand. When ready, take a long, smooth and steady drag straight into your lungs. In other words pretend as if you were breathing a deep breath while using the vape.

EXPLAINING MOUTH TO LUNG VAPOR INHALE

This is again, an inhalation technique. When utilizing this technique you simply; inhale, hold the vapours in your mouth and inhale deeply into your lungs. This does not give the direct contact of vapours to your lungs that DL offers.

How to do Mouth to Lung?

To achieve success when doing this technique all you have to do is take a smooth and steady drag into the mouth. After, you will then hold the vapour in your mouth and finally take a deep inhale into the lungs. Don’t forget to exhale!  If you have smoked before, be prepared to take a bit of a longer drag then you usually would when using this method.

Can you mix them?

Though there are seemingly two very different methods, there can be a grey area between the two. Regardless of which technique is used, the vapours will end up in your lungs either way. However, these terms are still used to define which is which.

FOR VAPE BEGINNERS

When people first start off vaping, the most widely preferred method is mouth to lung inhale. This is better used for devices that offer a tighter draw and higher levels of nicotine. This method almost mimics the use of a cigarette.  For new vapers, direct lung inhale can be quite harsh, this can make them cough intensely.

Which is best for flavour?

New and old vapers both agree that mouth to lung is the best way to maximize flavour while they are vaping. This is most likely because you are adding less air when you inhale, and the vapours have a chance to spend some time in your mouth first. This will give it more time to stimulate your taste buds. 

For making clouds?

If you are a vaper that enjoys blowing fat clouds, direct lung inhale will be the best method for you. This gives you a much more intense experience, and will produce big clouds in the process.

Direct Vapor for Beginners

When doing direct lung inhale, it is ideal to use an e-liquid that contains a higher vegetable glycerin (VG) ratio. This helps to make a smooth vaping experience with more vapours. This also helps to make sure the throat is not sore and create big clouds in the process.  Most common VG:PG ratios include 70:30 and 80:20.

Mouth to Lung for Beginners

This method is best executed with e-liquids that contain a high level of Propylene Glycol (PG). This helps to give a decent hit to the throat without causing much pain.  A 50:50 ratio on e-liquids is most ideal.

E LIQUID NICOTINE STRENGTH

When using a more powerful device, there is a chance to get a lot of vapour when doing DL. This means that you would be getting a stronger dose of nicotine per hit. This can also effect when it hits your throat.

This means that you’ll need to go for something that has a low strength of nicotine. Direct Lung vapers use very low levels of nicotine which can be 0.6%, 0.3% or even as low as 0%.

Mouth to Lung Nicotine Suggestion

When deciding on a nicotine level when doing MTL, will really vary depending on one's specific needs. To give perspective, if you are used to smoking cigarettes or have recently quit, you will need a higher level of nicotine when vaping. In general, stronger levels of nicotine will be needed to do MTL enjoyably. 

If you are thinking of moving from MTL to DL, there will be a lot to consider. You need to think about the nicotine levels that best suit you, as well as how much vapour you will be inhaling. Thinking about your intake will help to decide what nicotine levels are best for you. Take into consideration, if you're thinking of getting 1.2%, then imagine taking in four times that amount. 0.3% may be the better option.

COILS MTL VS DL

Coils are apart or your vape and are located in the tank. These are used to heat up your e-liquid of choice, which is what turns it into vapour. There can be different resistances depending on the coil you have. This is measured in ohms which is used with the symbol: Ω.

A quick coil rundown:

Coils with a higher resistance uses less power but produces a small amount of vapor.  Coils with a lower resistance uses more battery power but produces a larger amount of vapour

Which coils do I use?

Direct Vapor Vape Tank Coils

Usually when using the DL method you will want more vapour to be produced. This means a coil with a lower resistance will be better for this technique. Using a coil with a resistance of less than one ohm is what most people tend to lean towards, coils can be 0.1 ohm. 

Mouth to Lung Vape Tank Coils

This technique does not require a lot of vapour. This means a coil with a higher resistance will be best suited for doing MTL. Something higher than one ohm would be good.
