Is Vaping Safer than Smoking?
Scientists say that vaping can be effective for those trying to kick smoking. But make no mistake, both come with several health risks.
Cigarettes and e-cigarettes lead to heart disease, not just for smokers but also those around them. About one-third of deaths are believed to be from secondhand cigarette smoke. Tobacco smoke contains over 7,000 chemicals of which at least 250 are said to be harmful and 69 cause cancer.
However, e-cigarettes and vaping devices are recommended to ease the transition for those trying to kick smoking for good. Clinical researchers at the John Hopkins Ciccarone Centre for the Prevention of Heart Disease say that vaping may be a better alternative, although it is still unsafe. Take a look below to decide for yourself.
Toxins: Regular tobacco contains toxic chemicals such as carbon monoxide, ammonia and cyanide. Vaping contains fewer toxins. Vape toxins that may affect the lungs causing respiratory diseases are largely from inferior quality devices that use modified e-liquids, many of which contain THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive chemical found in marijuana.
- Avoid using e-cigarettes that contain high concentrations of THC.
- Avoid consulting uninformed friends and unlicensed dealers to buy vaping products.
- Avoid using substances that are not recommended by vaping device manufacturers.
Nicotine: Nicotine is a toxic element that is highly addictive. It leads to cravings that can spike up your blood pressure, your heart rate and the chances of suffering a stroke.
Both cigarettes and e-cigarettes that contain nicotine are harmful to your health. Nicotine can lead to lung disease and asthma if you use extra-strength vape cartridges that contain higher concentrations of nicotine. It’s best if you said “no” to nicotine to protect your health.
Odour: If you thought e-cigarettes are a better alternative simply because there is no strong odour as compared to smoking, think again! Vape cartridges come with flavourings such as watermelon and apples that only appear safer. There are other potentially harmful substances such as diacetyl and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and heavy metals such as nickel, lead and tin that can cause cancer to both users and non-users around them.
Impact on developing brains: The liquid in vaping can harm the developing brains of teenagers and fetuses in pregnant women. The liquid can be poisonous if it is swallowed or absorbed through the skin and eyes. There are have been numerous cases of lung damage, even death from liquid swallowed or inhaled by children, teenagers and pregnant or lactating women.
The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that in early 2020, there were over, 2,800 hospitalizations and deaths from vaping.
Yet, all said and done, vaping is still better than smoking for those trying to give it up because the concentration of toxins is lesser. The CDC added that smoking causes chronic pulmonary disease, lung cancer deaths and cardiovascular diseases. It can reduce sperm count, impair the immune system and increase inflammation, with the potential to fatally affect all organs. It’s best if you quit smoking and switch to vaping till you give it up.
