NEW VAPE EXCISE TAX IN CANADA - FAQ

Q: WHAT IS THE NEW VAPE EXCISE TAX?

A: Earlier this year, we talked about a potential vape tax hitting our markets. The Government of Canada's 2022 budget plan revealed their intentions to put an excise duty on all vaping products. Unfortunately, this tax has been confirmed to begin as of October 1st this year. This will affect the cost of product for users all across Canada, as this is a federal tax. Provinces will also have the choice to opt-in an additional tax on a provincial level. In today's blog post, we're going to be taking a look at how this vape tax is going to affect costs.

Q: WHEN DOES THE NEW VAPE TAX START?

A: October 1st 2022 is the regulated start date of all NEW manufactured inventory. Online Vape stores and Vape shops will have until January 1st 2023 to sell off non stamped vaping products. All new inventory coming into Vape stores will be Tax stamped with the cost built into our pricing.

Dragon Vape is focused on providing its customers with tax free products for as long as possible, however as of January 1, 2023 it will be illegal to sell any vape E-Liquid products without a Tax Stamp in Canada.

Q: HOW MUCH IS THE TAX ON E-LIQUIDS? 

• $1 per 2 milliliters (mL), or fraction thereof, for the first 10 mL of vaping substance in the vaping device or immediate container
• $1 per 10 mL, or fraction thereof, for amounts over the first 10 mL

This impacts all products with E-Liquids and Vape Juice, including disposable vape pens, vape pods and DIY products.

Q: IS VAPE HARDWARE TAXED?

A: No. The new excise tax is only applicable to products that contain E-Liquids and Vape Juice. Hardware, accessories, replacement coils and tanks will not be impacted.

Q: HOW MUCH WILL E-LIQUIDS COST?

A: E-Liquid and Vape Juice pricing will be as follows:

30 mL Pricing + $7
60 mL Pricing + $10
100 mL Pricing + $14
120 mL Pricing + $16

Q: HOW MUCH WILL VAPE PODS COST?

A: Vape Pods pricing will be as follows;

$1 per Pod in a pack.  

Example 1:
Stlth / Allo / Clix Pods will move from $14.99 to $17.99 for 3 Pods per pack.

Example 2:
Vuse Alto ePod and Relx replacement pods will move from $13.99 to $15.99 for 2 Pods per pack.

Q: HOW MUCH WILL DISPOSABLE VAPES COST?

A: Disposable Vapes pricing will be based on the amount of E-Liquid in each unit.

Example:
Mr Fog Disposable Vape pens would move from $24.99 to $28.99. Each Mr Fog disposable vape pen holds 8mL of E-Liquid which is a $4.00 Tax increase.

Q: IS IT CHEAPER TO SMOKE?

A: NO! Vaping is not only cheaper than smoking, according to Health Canada:

"Vaping is less harmful than smoking. Many of the toxic and cancer-causing chemicals in tobacco and the tobacco smoke form when tobacco is burned.

Vaping products do not:

produce smoke 
contain tobacco
involve burning

Except for nicotine, vaping products typically contain:

a fraction of the 7,000 chemicals found in tobacco smokelower levels of several of the harmful chemicals found in smoke"

Example:
Pack a day smoker would spend roughly $18 per pack of cigarettes which would be $126 per week.

A vaper can spend $30-$35 per 60mL bottle of Vape Juice which would last them the same time period.
